| General Information Section Information The Pacific Northwest Section of the Society for Range Management encompasses the states of Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and the province of British Columbia. We operate under a set of bylaws adopted in July 1990. The current membership is approximately 360. The Section holds two meetings a year that are rotated among Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The Section publishes a Section Newsletter three times a year. Copies will be placed in this site. The Section may present up to two awards each year. The Trail Boss Award (link to past winners) is the highest award presented to give recognition to those individuals, partners or formal groups for outstanding work or activities contributing to better understanding, use, or developement of range resources of the Pacific Northwest. The Trail Boss Award typically recognizes sustained or long-term accomplishments and/or contributions to range or achievements of a very substantive nature. The second award is the Exemplary Service Award (link to past winners) that recognizes either long-term or short-term exceptional efforts, activities, involvement, leadership, and/or personal commitment given for the benefit of the society, its members or the range/resource environment itself. The contributions being recognized must stem from activities undertaken within the geographic area of the PNW Section. Code of OperationsThe PNW Section has adopted a Code of Operation that includes vision, mission, and goal statements: VisionThe PNW Section believes that properly functioning ecosystems provide for the long term sustainability of watersheds, plants, animals, and people. MissionTo promote ways to maintain or enhance the diversity of the ecological community critical to watersheds, plants, animals, and people that depend on rangelands for their sustenance. Goals
Student ActivitiesThe PNW Section has a long history of actively supporting both High School and College students interested in careers in rangeland management. Each year the Section tries to sponsor high school students to attend the International Annual Meeting generally held in February. These students compete in paper presentations and are involved in many informal activities. Also, each year the Section provides as many scholarships to college students within the Section as our funds allow. The Section has historically provided at least one $500 scholarship. Recently we have been able to provide additional $250 and $500 scholarships. One of the requirements for these scholarships is that they be getting a degree at one of the Colleges or Universities within the Section including Oregon State University, Washington State University, Eastern Oregon State College, the University of British Columbia, and Thompson Rivers University. The Section has also supported college students to attend both Section meetings as well as the International Annual Meeting. Parent OrganizationThe parent organization, The Society for Range Management, is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. There are 23 different sections and about 3,500 members.
