Following are words from Sonja E.R. Leverkus about her good friend Keith:

I have had the pleasure, privilege, and honour of knowing Keith Carroll for the entirety of my professional career as a range agrologist. Not only has Keith been one of my mentors through all these years in the thick and thin of things as we scratched our heads about fitting guide outfitters into the BC Range Use Plan mould, countless discussions about northern BC rangelands, plant ID and prescribed fire, Keith has been my friend throughout my time at the Forest Service and in the past decade beyond that. I have found myself numerous times going to email him to ask for his advice on a range matter or help with plant ID this past summer …

Keith remained a driving force in our collaborative effort to put good fire out on the land right up to this spring – so much so that he participated in the peer review team over the past couple years, contributing his rangeland expertise and knowledge to every discussion, bringing forward connections and all his time across this vast landscape and as always, going above and beyond what was asked. Above and beyond in consideration and passion with humility, curiosity, and care is how I know my good friend Keith.

Keith remains to be cherished by those in his range world. Numerous ranchers north of Fort St. John repeatedly talk about Keith Carroll to this day and how much Keith helped them, listened to them, and did his very best to address their concerns. Above all, Keith took the time to have relationships with those he served during his time as a Range Agrologist and that has left a lasting impression on ranchers in the north peace and elsewhere I am sure.

A little story about Keith:

In 2020 Keith joined our team to do some range health monitoring and he was quite convinced that we would not have a problem passing by a wetter area to get to our range sites. It was the Corb Lund song – the truck got stuck – in real time when first our side by side got stuck and then Keith’s truck got stuck trying to pull out the side by side and then our ford truck almost got stuck trying to pull Keith’s truck and our side by side out. While Keith was not one for the spotlight, I did happen to sneak some photos of him during that time together as attached.

Keith Carroll – amazing range agrologist, public servant, human, and friend. Forever in our hearts and across these northern rangelands we will cherish you and all that you taught us, provided to the land and to all those who steward it, and always, your friendship and kindness. We all tip our torches and hold you in the highest regard my friend. You are missed on this earth greatly. Onwards and upwards.
