New grazing decision support system

Webinar by Tip Hudson, August 4, 2022, 3-4 p.m.

A team from WSU Extension, US Forest Service, and University of Arizona is currently developing a grazing decision support system. Their work is funded by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). It will allow users to interact with multiple sources of satellite-derived forage production data and predict forage availability over time and across space.

Tip Hudson and colleagues outlined the concept for this in a recent article in Rangelands, “Big Landscapes meet Big Data“).  Tip will describe recently available data and why this web-based tool will be advantageous for stocking rate calculations, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) renewals on federal land, and planning current grazing.

Tip Hudson is an Extension Professor in rangeland and livestock management at Washington State University. He has lived in Ellensburg, Washington since leaving the University of Idaho in 2001. Tip’s work with WSU Extension has focused on sustainable rangeland grazing, riparian grazing to support stream function and water quality, land health monitoring, and grazing to meet habitat objectives. In his free time he enjoys exploring Washington’s diverse landscapes with his wife and children and playing the electric bass guitar. He can be reached at .
