The Section may present may present several awards each year. These awards include The Trail Boss; Exemplary Service; James A. Brunner: In for the Long Haul; Excellence in Rangeland Management; and Special awards.

Trail Boss Award

The Trail Boss Award is the highest award presented to give recognition to those individuals, partners or formal groups for outstanding work or activities contributing to better understanding, use, or development of range resources of the Pacific Northwest. This award typically recognizes sustained or long-term accomplishments and/or contributions to range or achievements of a very substantive nature.

Exemplary Service Award

The Exemplary Service Award recognizes either long-term or short-term exceptional efforts, activities, involvement, leadership, and/or personal commitment given for the benefit of the society, its members or the range/resource environment itself. The contributions being recognized must stem from activities undertaken within the geographic area of the PNW Section.

In for the Long Haul Award

In 2011, the Section began awarding the “In for the Long Haul Award” in honor of Jim Brunner, who was the PNW SRM’er who failed to “hang up his spurs”, serving SRM for decades, throughout a distinguished career, into retirement, and until his death. This award recognizes people who devote their careers, and their entire lives to the betterment of rangelands and the people associated with them.

Excellence in Rangeland Management Award

The Excellence in Rangeland Management Award is a practitioner's award designed to honor ranchers who practice land stewardship, water quality management, and demonstrated concern for wildlife on their property. The PNW honoree's nominators are invited to create a poster which will be entered into competition for the Parent Society's Excellence in Rangeland Management Award consideration at the SRM Annual Meeting the following January/February.

Redd Fund Rancher Award

The Redd Fund is a joint venture of the Charles Redd Foundation and SRM that offers a financial award to ranchers to attend an SRM annual meeting in an effort to recruit them to SRM and to increase the visibility of SRM to other organizations. The Red Fund will cost-share (75%) with sponsoring sections (25%) to cover registration fees up to $500 for ranchers or ranch couples new to SRM. Preference is given to those who plan on attending the majority of the meeting.

Special Awards

Special Awards are occasionally awarded at the discretion of the Section President for service which he/she deems particularly noteworthy.
